How to Use a Menstrual Cup
- Wash Your Hands
Always start by washing your hands with soap and water to ensure cleanliness before handling your menstrual cup. - Choose a Comfortable Position
Find a comfortable position to insert the cup. You can sit on the toilet, squat, or lift one leg onto the toilet seat or bathtub edge. - Fold the Menstrual Cup
Fold the menstrual cup to make insertion easier. Common folds include:- C Fold: Pinch the sides together and fold the cup in half to form a “C.”
- Punchdown Fold: Push the top of the cup down toward the base, creating a triangle shape.
- Insert the Cup
Hold the folded cup firmly and gently insert it into your vagina at a slight angle (aiming towards your lower back). It should sit lower than a tampon. - Let the Cup Pop Open
Once inserted, the cup will naturally unfold. You may need to rotate it slightly or pull it down gently to create a seal against the vaginal walls, preventing leaks. - Check the Position
Make sure the cup is positioned correctly. You shouldn’t feel discomfort; if you do, it may not be fully opened or may need to be adjusted. - Wear the Cup
The menstrual cup can be worn for up to 12 hours, depending on your flow. You can wear it during physical activities, including swimming and exercising. - Remove the Cup
When it’s time to remove the cup, wash your hands first.- Squat or Sit: Find a comfortable position.
- Pinch the Base: Reach for the cup and gently pinch the base to break the seal.
- Pull it Out: Slowly pull the cup out while tilting it slightly to prevent spilling.
- Empty and Clean the Cup
Once removed, empty the contents into the toilet. Rinse the cup with water and mild soap, or wipe it with a clean tissue if you’re not near a sink. - Sterilize After Your Cycle
At the end of your menstrual cycle, sterilize the cup by boiling it in water for 5-10 minutes. Store it in a breathable bag or container until your next use.
Tips for Success
- Practice: It may take a few tries to feel comfortable with insertion and removal.
- Stay Relaxed: Tension can make insertion more difficult, so take deep breaths.
- Experiment with Positions: Find the insertion position that works best for you.
Using a menstrual cup can take some getting used to, but with practice, it can become a convenient and eco-friendly alternative to traditional period products. If you have any further questions or need tips, feel free to ask!
